When I worked at the local Sheriff’s office, I witnessed a few times where strategic planning would have been useful. One time was when they started planning to build a new jail. This plan involved the Sheriff making decisions that should have been a group decision as it was a jail, Sheriff’s Office, Court house officials, and District Attorney’s office. This would have been a time that all officials could have agreed on how the facility would be set up to better serve the public, the officials, and the inmates who need to attend court. The architect only talked with the Sheriff when it was being planned so I felt that was not good for business.

Another organization could have engaged in effective strategic planning in a similar situation. That is due to looking at the situation gives you an idea on how things should be planned rather than try to maneuver many small projects that will have the same result.
